VIBRATORY REMOVAL OF SHEET PILES TO START IN EARLY JULY

Updated 25 june 2014

It has been a busy year for the builders of the A2 tunnel in Maastricht. From excavation to shoring to concrete work: one job follows the other. We recently completed the tunnel excavation work, and the two concreting trains are now working towards each other from north and south with nothing in their way.

The southern concrete train has made the most progress, and in the vicinity of Nassaulaan we are now backfilling the excavation pit outside the tunnel walls. The top of the A2 tunnel is also disappearing from sight. The next big nuisance-producing activity will start soon: vibratory removal of the sheet piles.
From south to north and vice versa
Avenue2-subcontractor Terracon will begin removing sheet piles from the ground in early July. We will have the vibratory removal work carried out in phases, depending on the progress of the concrete and backfilling work. The first phase will begin at Nassaulaan, near Heerderwegbrug. Over the course of three weeks the removal work will proceed further towards Regentesselaan. We will keep you up to date on the subsequent schedule through our website, De Ster, and digital progress reports.
From Monday 7 July through Friday 25 July 2014 we will be removing the sheet piles in the southern part of the N2 excavation pit, along tunnel sections 31-38 From Monday 7 July through Friday 25 July 2014 we will be removing the sheet piles in the southern part of the N2 excavation pit, along tunnel sections 31-38
Brief yet intense nuisance
In consultation with the A2 District Platform, the A2 Maastricht project office, and the Municipal Council of Maastricht, Avenue2 has opted for brief, intense nuisance rather than lengthy, ongoing nuisance. This means we will work quickly during the vibratory work and remove as many sheet piles as possible in the shortest possible time.
Schedule
Phase 2: from Gemeenteflat towards Regentesselaan
The vibratory removal of sheet piles will continue in the middle of september, starting near the Gemeenteflat and moving towards the Regentesselaan. We expect to finish the removal of sheet piles in the southern part of the excavation pit around the middle of october.

The schedule and location will continue to depend on the progress of the concrete and backfilling work. As such, the vibratory work will not proceed from one end to the other but rather will jump from south to north and back again. All along the excavation pit – from Nassaulaan to Geusselt – local residents will experience major nuisance caused by the vibratory removal of sheet piles until early 2015.
Attention motorists!
Most of the time the flow of traffic along the N2/A2 will be unhampered, but motorists may also experience nuisance in the form of noise and vibration. The vibratory work will, after all, take place a short distance from the motorway.

East-west traffic should note that sheet piles under and around Scharnerwegbrug and Voltabrug will be removed in the course of 2014. This will be followed by new closures and diversions for all traffic.
